Background


What are Web 2.0 Tools?

Web 2.0 encompasses(includes) many emerging tools such as blogs, wikis, and podcasts that are published via RSS Readers to the “Personal Web Pages” of people who read them. This means that all of these features are presented on the personal websites of the people that use them. All of these digital items are indexed(pointed out) using tags(specialized search words or phrases that link to other sites) so they can be found by others. Social bookmarking is also a popular way to share this information. This is a web 2.0 feature for internet users to save,share and search bookmarks of web pages. Web 2.0 Websites at the bottom MT
The term Web 2.0 became popular after the first O’Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004. According to Tim O'Reilly, "Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the internet as platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform."
Web 2.0 is a term often applied to a perceived ongoing transition of the World Wide Web from a collection of websites to a full-fledged computing platform serving web applications to end users. Ultimately Web 2.0 services are expected to replace desktop computing applications for many purposes.

The basic characteristics of Web 2.0 includes: delivering (and allowing users to use) applications entirely through a browser; users owning the data on the site and implementing control over that data; the nature of systems that are designed for user contribution, such as open source and Wikipedia and democracy that encourages users to insert value to the application as they utilize it; a rich, interactive, user-friendly interface based on web development technique for generating interactive web applications; and some social networking aspects.

Web 2.0 focuses on the concept of "participatory web," meaning the use of the internet in a way that allows multiple users access. It focuses on the idea of sharing online, whether it be messages, notes, pictures, or products.

  • But Web 2.0 is not without its "growing pains." It has put innocent, naive children in contact with potential predators and businesses are rushing to keep up. The MySpace Company brings together 46 of the biggest Sex Offender registers in the United States. Now little kid under the age of 10 to like adults have Myspace and the parents are not happy about there kids being on a place where there are sex offenders and people that could hurt or find their child. Now there is a technology called Sentinel Safe that will protect little children from sex offenders.
  • Google buys Zingku, Mobile social network
  • Microsoft invests $240 million on facebook
  • wikinvest gets $2.5 million in series A round
  • People are using Google to track down the fires in California.
  • Creators of Web 2.0 think that it is necessary for users to establish copyright and privacy laws even though a large part of the Web 2.0 population doesn't really know what that is.

Benefits

Web 2.0 tools have revolutionized the way we use the internet. As you have read above web 2.0 tools are websites that are used to share, read and search for information. Now you can post and share information online and collaborate with someone half way around the world, and you don't have to look for information it can come to you through RSS feeds. This has revolutionized the way we deal with things and people online. Research has been made so much easier through RSS feeds, you go to one website and all the information you want will be found there. You can also share photos and videos with people all around the world through social networks such as flickr, facebook and nings. There also many other types of social networks that are used all around the world that are extremely popular. Not only that but these websites make a lot of money.

Impact on Education


Web 2.0 is the new trivia of our generation and almost all schools around the world are using computers with internet access. Webs connectivity process helps us collaborate ideas and information. To formulate a sense of Web 2.0 comparing it with Web 1.0 will help create a better picture of the world education is being effected now in our society:

In fact, the list goes on. According to my video, Javed mentioned the significant difference of the way he led his student life back in US and how he is coping with it here in Bangladesh where he is working as a system analyzer. Compared to Bangladesh, US are much more advanced in utilizing the web tools more efficiently than here in Bangladesh and they are more aware of the consequences of authentic issues here. MySpace is a very popular site in the US where as in Bangladesh people tend to stick to Friendster and other similar sources.

In some of the schools it is said that these communicative softwares are blocked and not permitted in the school premises, but the question arises, is it fair on the students as well as the teachers or are we still sticking with our old school methods? Here at ISD we use www.elgg.net as our blogging source in grade 11 which has helped us to link with the world outside and deal social issues with a broad perspective.

Web 2.0 specifically influences education through online tutoring sites like Mynoteit.com, that connect students to teachers to allow for real-time one on one coaching without the inconvenience of arranging a meeting.

While Web 2.0 has increased the ways in which we can collaborate (expanding to include creation, sharing, and editing data, blogs, journals, music, and videos online), a priority in implementing the sites is the safety of the students involved. More than ever, schools are concerned with protecting students from online predators or scams. "Cyber bullying" remains a concern: students being harassed online by strangers.

ISD Survey on the number of people use Web 2.0


According to a survey that I took here at ISD, last week, out of 100 people (teachers and students included), 69 people agreed on having these sites up on and running while the 31 others think it is a waste of energy and time and a major source of distraction in class. Including that 86 of these people were students and 14 of them were teachers.
It is very important that one should know and understand the use of technology systems, information, and software, along with the school rules. It is also a major issue to prevent people from obtaining personal information or passwords. The basic ownership of ideas is very important to keep.

These issues are affecting the educational area by making it unsure for some organizations to accept the liberal act of these web sites. It is our duty to make sure that our country, no matter where we live, is up to the beat and moving along with the world in order to make it look flat, not round.

Web 2.0 also helps everybody learn through the web by allowing the spread of information easily through presentations using flash instead of the old fashioned html. Instead of reading text you can watch a movie regarding the text.

or Read Write Web as some people know it, has made employment easier than it used to be. When web 2.0 came out it cost a great deal of money for the businesses to have some of the programs that web 2.0 offered you today. They used to have to pay for all the hosting, accounting, and inventory systems that they needed for the their business. Well, that changed, and now you don't have to pay anything to get these systems. Another feature that is really cool for a person who wants to write a book or print out a t-shirt of their own is the LONG TAIL basically all it is a chart like the one to the right the tan color would be like your book or shirt and amazon or place like it that would put them on their websites for you and you would make money even if you only sold a 100 or less of you product then you would make a profit and that is a way you can get in to business for yourself and start making money almost instantly and it would be a great life style if you got pretty good at the thing you were selling.

cm_logo.gif The first social networking website, created in 1995 was the classmates.com. In 1997 SixDegrees.com, the original networking social service was out and it lasted till 2001. SixDegrees acquired a reputation as a spammer.

Friendster.JPG Friendster was considered the top online social network service until around April 2004 when it was overtaken by MySpace. Google tired to buy their site as well but was turned down.

Myspace_logo.PNGMySpace is the worlds most popular site and their service has gradually gained more popularity than similar websites to achieve nearly 80% of visits to online social networking websites. The current MySpace service was founded in July 2003 by Tom Anderson.

Wikipedia uses a software named 'wiki' and it allows the contents to be edited by multiple users.

200px-Google_logo_transparent.pngGoogle was started by a group students as a research project from Stanford University. It is a search engine that analyzes the relationship between websites and produce results.

Technorati_(logo).gifTechnorati is another one such search engine like Google but a search engine for blogs. It was founded by Dave Sifry and it contributes to open source software. It is banned in China and been criticized for its censorship.

del.icio.us is a website with a social bookmarking service. It was on air from 2003 and was found by Joshua Schatcher. Del.icio.us_logo.png
One very helpful option on this site are the tags.

170px-Flickr_gamma_Logo.svg.pngFlickr is a photo sharing website and an online community platform and an example of web 2.0. Flickr can be considered a "folksonomy". Folksonomies are sites where users add their own tags for their files, i.e. user generated taxonomy.

Bit Torrent is a P2P file distribution protocol and it is a free software of that protocol. Torrents are formed in order to share files or group of files that contains the metadata about the files and about the host computer that coordinates the file distribution.

NewBitTorrentLogo.pngBit Torrent greatly reduces the load on seeders. After the initial pieces transfer from the seed, the pieces are individually transferred from client to client. This demonstrates how the original seeder only needs to send out one copy of the file for all the clients to receive a copy.

Hyperlink to my videoBloglines is a web based software that uses a web feed to retrieve syndicated web content such as weblogs, podcast and mass media websites with a customized set of search results. It was sold to ask.com in the year 2005.

Hyperlink to my Video E-bay is a website for auction style trading of personal and commercial items. Members can create profiles, use facilitated payment methods (i.e. PayPal), and discuss products with each other. It was created in 1995.

TagWorld is an Internet start-up competing with MySpace. Its biggest attraction is that it has a notable feature of being able to upload 1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAT8wxn-NAg GB of music, pictures and videos to the site for later playback from anywhere with an internet connection.
